Preparing For Heavenly Encounters

I didn’t sleep for a very long period of time last night. I was so filled with energy that I spent hours reading Kenneth Hagin’s book Plans, Purposes and Pursuits. Actually it was more like meditating on his teaching. This is about my third time reading it and I am still finding very useful nuggets in the writing. One particular thing that had me thinking was the importance of hearing from God in dreams and visions. Many people I have met said they do not dream. They do not have visions.

Are you one of those persons?

I hope you will dream again. Many of the encounters I had with God came through dreams and visions, while I prayed. These moments confirmed the Word of God and solidified my faith in a very real God. You see I struggled to believe I was worthy for Him to speak with. Through many dreams God revealed himself to me and affirmed me as a son.

The first time I saw Father God was a few weeks after my baptism. One night I dreamt that my earthly father came to visit me. He wore a bright red suit and drove a red convertible. The roof of the car was down. The back seat was filled with boxes and boxes of presents. He had the broadest smile and laughed heartily as he looked at me. Those eyes burned right into my soul. As I talked about the dream with a friend the Holy Spirit revealed that it was indeed Father God that had visited me. I was overjoyed to see how my heavenly Father loved and appreciated me. It has been several years since that happened happened. And the dream is still just as vivid in my imagination.

Since that first encounter I have had many dreams and visions in which I have seen God the Father, the Lord Jesus and the Holy. During a period of a few months Father God appear again. This time He took the form of a dark cloud. The cloud had living fire all over it. There was thunder and lightning coming from the cloud as he spoke. That scene terrified me. His voice shook every cell in my body. His appearance was just as it was when he visited Moses and the nation of Israel in Exodus 24. Most of the times when I encountered the Lord Jesus his back was turned to me. Golden light radiated from Him. It was like an aura around him. He wore a white robe. In those dreams he showed me things that were to come. His plans for the future. I have seen the Holy Spirit with the appearance of a person however he was like a vapor or a being of pure fire. There was one instance when he manifested as a dove.

I have also I encountered angels many times in my dreams. These occurred so frequently that I thought every Saint had these experiences. I was amazed to discover that this was not the case for most of the people of God. Most do not dream. Only a handful have visions.

Most of this stem from our negative view of these encounters as mere fantasies and excesses that must be avoided. Entire sermons are sometimes preached warning Christians to feel from these supernatural aspects of the faith. Sadly, while we may view dreams and visions in this manner many people in the world do not. The failure of the church to provide legit guidance has led them to seek out other sources. Entire industries are built around people seeking signs from stars, cards and spiritual experiences that have nothing to do with the Lord Jesus. I was one of the star-seekers. I consulted the stars for comfort and to know what would occur in my day. In my early childhood we only owned a radio. There was no television. Every morning at 6:45 AM Monday to Friday the radio announcer would say in the most beautiful voice, “This is your day under the stars!” I was merely six years old but I was curious. I wanted to know what the stars held in store for me. I would hang on to every word spoken. As I grew older, I read the newspaper regularly to know what the stars had in store for my da or week. I was very much into idolatry and didn’t know it. It just seemed very harmless. No one was hurt. It comforted me and eased all anxieties. Praise the Lord Jesus that foolishness stopped the day God began speaking to me.

Your Father Desires To Speak to You

As I pondered on why saints were having a challenge dreaming, the Holy Spirit said this this to me.

Every saint should dream. Dreams and visions are means that God uses to imprint His message to you.

Job said God gives you dreams to help you to remember what he is saying and keep you from danger and pride (Job 33:15-18). That’s not a trivial thing. The bible shows that kings took their dreams serious. Just one dream helped a nation avert a national crisis. What they did not only saved that nation but it also helped many others. Many immigrants came to them to avoid dying from the famine that was crippling other nations. This is the extent to which one dream from God may impact your life.

Do you know that you think in pictures? Just give me few seconds. I will show you that you do. If I should ask you to describe your favorite shirt or blouse. I bet you do not have to think about it. Just like that you can describe its color, whether has buttons, designs, hidden pockets, what makes you love it more than other similar garments. I bet you will smile just thinking about it. Do you realize that as you began describing it you could see an image of it in your imagination? Many times when I help people overcome past encounters from their past. They have an immersive experience. They begin to relive everything. They can see everything and have the same sensory encounter. Sight, hearing, smell, taste and feeling are all entwined in the experience. I bet if I should carry you through this exercise you would have the same experience.

God created your brain. He knows that you think in pictures. This is why He frequently uses images to communicate his message. We often see this in His conversations with the prophets in the Bible. When he began preparing Jeremiah for ministry he showed him an image and asked him to describe what he saw. As Jeremiah related what he saw God gave him understanding. With it came the message for Israel. (See Jeremiah 1).

Dreams and visions are the visual language of God. As we get closer to the end of the age, there will be an increase in dreams and visions. God will visit His children more and more. Understanding what He is saying will be very important.

“It will come about after this
That I will pour out My Spirit on all mankind;
And your sons and your daughters will prophesy,
Your old men will have dreams,
Your young men will see visions.
29 And even on the male and female servants
I will pour out My Spirit in those days.

30 I will display wonders in the sky and on the earth,
Blood, fire, and columns of smoke.
31 The sun will be turned into darkness,
And the moon into blood,
Before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes.
32 And it will come about that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord
Will be saved;
For on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem
There will be those who escape,
Just as the Lord has said,
Even among the survivors whom the Lord calls. – Joel 2:28-32
