Men Ought Always to Pray

Pray Without Ceasing Luke 18:1

Am I the only person who struggle with prayer? Can you identify with the feeling that sometimes your prayer is just not good enough? I mean the right words are not spoken. The correct formula is not applied, etc, etc. When I listened to Dr. Cindy Trimm I was convinced that I definitely needed to re-enter my prayer closet. Perhaps to shut it for good. Compared to her I just babble. That woman can pray up a storm!

Prayer has always been a challenge for me in my christian walk. For many years I successfully avoided prayer. Growing up I attended church regularly and participated in almost all activities open to children. Well except prayer. Well except pray. Michael would be good for a comment or two. I would lead an activity or two. Pray? No way. Let that guy pray. He’s better at it. That was my attitude until I recommitted my life and began to ask the Lord to teach me to pray effectively.

To my surprise He was more interested in conversing than applying some formula. I wanted to pattern the praying grandmothers. I wanted to pattern the global intercessors. I said just speak to Me. “Son just talk with me.” What I came to realise was that out of the conversation everything else flowed. As we conversed prayer shifted from the prayer closet to being in constant communication 24 hours of the day all week long. We are talking 24/7! All day long. All year long.

Our God is a communicator. He loves to talk with his children. He wants to have a real conversation with you. As you talk with Him expect a response. Learn to wait for it. Do you know that He loves to converse? He will talk even about stuff that we deem silly. He loves to laugh. Yeah! He sure does! You do know jokes are from God? We did not learn to do that on our own. It came from His sense of humor. ‘In His Presence there is fullness of joy. At His right hand there are pleasures forever more’ (Psalm 16:11)’ I cannot tell you how many times I have just bust out laughing while in praying. Sometimes it seems misplaced. Very irreverent. I was trying to be all holy and serious. He was not having it. A laughing fit came on me. I just started laughing and laughing and laughing. You know most of those times I needed it. God knew I was taking life way too serious. After the laughter I was completely relaxed the frustration or concerns of my heart were gone. My perspective was completely changed.

Luke 18:1

Also [Jesus] told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not to turn coward (faint, lose heart, and give up).

Ephesians 6:18

Pray at all times (on every occasion, in every season) in the Spirit, with all [manner of] prayer and entreaty. To that end keep alert and watch with strong purpose and perseverance, interceding in behalf of all the saints (God’s consecrated people).

“Praying at all times. That’s impossible! Yeah! Yeah! No one can achieve that.”

You may be saying this to yourself. I assure you it is quite possible. It begins with being aware that He is always with us. Our Maker wired us for continuous communication with Him. When His Spirit came into us He did not come in to just rest. He came in to communicate with our spirit. To let us know we are his children.

Romans 8:16

The Spirit Himself [thus] testifies together with our own spirit, [assuring us] that we are children of God.

It is also important to know that when the Holy Spirit came inside of us He became one with us. Our spirit and His Spirit became one. There is no separation. We are one with Him. In my youth, I often heard my grandmother talking things over with herself. I thought it was just crazy. Why would she be talking about things in this manner. There was no one around. What I did not understand was that she was having an ongoing conversation with her Maker. The effect of it was the Presence of the Holy Spirit constantly moving on her. She would always be shutting “Holy!”. I just did not know. Well until now. My semi-illiterate grandmother did not know a lot of Bible verses. What she knew was relationship. She literally walked with Him every day.

1 Corinthians 6:17

But the person who is united to the Lord becomes one spirit with Him.

As His Spirit is in us, the Holy Spirit is maintaining constant communication with the God. He is searching the deep things of God concerning us. Those things are revealed to our spirit. If we learn to listen to our spirit. To trust what is in the heart we would not be anxious. We would not miss some of the opportunities He has already set up.

1 Corinthians 2:13

And we are setting these truths forth in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the [Holy] Spirit, combining and interpreting spiritual truths with spiritual language [to those who possess the Holy Spirit].

Our problem is that we have been conditioned to live this life from the outside in. Instead of the opposite. God wired us to live from our spirit. Totally from inside. Everything from God flows from our spirit out to the world around us. When we learn to live from the inside out the Presence of God will flow freely through us. We will also hear Him speak or feel his gently nudging in any given situation. We will also understand that God has already made all provisions for us before we came on this earth. Living from the inside out would allow us to see it much more clearly.

Romans 8:14-16

14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.

15 For [the Spirit which] you have now received [is] not a spirit of slavery to put you once more in bondage to fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption [the Spirit producing sonship] in [the bliss of] which we cry, Abba (Father)! Father!

16 The Spirit Himself [thus] testifies together with our own spirit, [assuring us] that we are children of God.

There have been many times while I am going about my business that the Lord will speak to me concerning someone. Sometimes He will just drop a song into my heart. As I sing it someone will be blessed. At other times He has lead my wife and I to pray for someone on the spot for someone. He may simply tell us that someone belongs to Him. At other times He may simply speak to us about the condition of a person. These times did not mess with our schedule. God would ensure that our work is completed as we did His business.

The communication does not have to be all serious. Do you know that He is always with you to counsel, guide, assist, reveal hidden things, protect, laugh, cry and talk with us every day. This is the essence of praying without ceasing. It begins with remaining aware that He is always with you. Then we must act upon that knowledge. It is no different from knowing that a woman is to be your wife or a man will be your husband.

“If you know that what would be your response?”

Would you begin to check out that person? Wouldn’t there be pursuit? You would make time to get to know that person. Time would be taken to talk. If the conversation is dry, dull or boring you would second guess entering into a relationship. Everyone of us love a relationship that allows free flowing conversation. We want spontaneous moments of laughter. We love those spontaneous moments of communication that say ‘I was thinking about you. I just couldn’t wait to get into your company’. When my wife comes home in the evenings I can see the smile on her face. She is happy to be home. We usually greet each other with a kiss. When that factor is absent we begin to feel a gap forming between us. The relationship begins to get familiar and stale.

The beautiful thing about conversing with God is that we need not detach when we are asleep. The conversation can be continued. I recommend that you invite Him to protect you, to speak with you and use you while you are sleeping. Every time I have done this I will enter into sleep but have several dreams. Sometimes I will be sleeping but very aware of everything around me while He is conversing with me. I would be aware of what is happening around me. Sometimes the Lord would take me, by the spirit, somewhere. It may be a neighbor’s house. It may to the future. It may be to the past or an encounter with angels or a saint of God. Sometimes the Lord will show the activities of the enemy. This should be your normal experience. You are His child. These experiences are not reserved for a select few. They belong to you.

I know it may feel uncomfortable when you start. Trust me it will get better with practise. Speak with Him until it becomes a normal part of your every day life. You will find that hours in prayer simply vanish. You will start praying and when you look up hours have gone yet it feels like you have only been speaking for a few minutes. “Isn’t this what happens when you are communicating with a loved one?”

Go ahead! Take the chance. I guarantee you, the communication will be free and delightful.
