I was surprised to hear that Pastor Donnie McClurkin was in an accident in December. The shock soon shifted to rejoicing as I heard how God miraculously saved his life. The Devil tried to take him out but God stepped in. Apparently, he fell asleep behind the wheel but God sent angels to surrounded and protected him. None of his bones were broken. Persons were prompted to respond quickly to the accident.
What a miracle! He woke with only a few scratches and stitches. As is usual with any accident there was also severe pain.
This man was so determined, he did not let that slow him down. Just a few days later, he took a plane to South Africa to minister at a concert.
God answered his faith. Had he been focused on the after-effects of the accident he would have stayed home. He had all reasons to moan and groan about the excruciating pain racking his body. But he chose to focus on the greatness of God. He was on a mission for the King of Kings. Nothing would slow him. What a beast! No wonder God has blessed him so much.
I was rejoicing as I listened to the story. Well until he mention what happened after the concert. Pastor Donnie reported that while he ministered the power of God was present. He was healed. Pain left his body. There was no pain as he moved and ministered under the anointing. When the concert was over the pain came back with a vengeance. God whipped him! Over and over he taunted him. A voice kept admonishing him that he should have used wisdom. He should have forgone the concert and rested after the accident.
Now wait a minute! Hold the press! Which god spoke? Is this El Shaddai? The God who provides? Is this the actions of Jehovah Rapha? The God who heals. Is healing hard for God? Is strengthening anyone hard for God? Has his power diminished since creation? Has he stopped responding to our faith? Let’s examine why Pastor Donnie was healed as he ministered during the concert. Heaven responded to his faith. He didn’t allow the accident to stop him. He expected that as He did the work of God, His Provider would strengthen him. He was bold in his faith. Like the woman with the issue of blood he reached up and violently took his healing. He snatched it as God passed by. He wasn’t there to entertain. He was there to release the Presence of God by his worship; knowing that once the Presence comes he would be healed. This is the action of a man of faith. To others it seem crazy. To God it is the sanest thing you can ever do. He loves when we take the limits off Him. He delights to see His children express their faith. Our acts of faith unlock the gifts of the Kingdom of God. Healing is but one of those gifts. God never uses sickness to teach us a lesson.
Pastor Donnie walking away completely healed from the concert would have given him glory. People would have been blessed. Can you imagine the shift that would occurred for his ministry. Persons would come to the concerts expecting God to touch them. There would be a greater demand on the anointing. God would be glorified! Hope would be given to the hopeless.
Be well balanced (temperate, sober of mind), be vigilant and cautious at all times; for that enemy of yours, the devil, roams around like a lion roaring [in fierce hunger], seeking someone to seize upon and devour.
9 Withstand him; be firm in faith [against his onset—rooted, established, strong, immovable, and determined], knowing that the same (identical) sufferings are appointed to your brotherhood (the whole body of Christians) throughout the world.
1 Peter 5:8-9, Amplified Bible Classic Edition
I firmly believe that what happened after the concert was the work of the Devil. Obviously Satan worked through people who cared for Pastor Donnie. Their advise to slow down, to be realistic, to be wise, found place in his heart. Their loving words made him drop his guard. When the Devil place the pain back on him, he also spoke in those ‘caring voices’. He listened and was defeated. The willpower to fight back left. Fear found a home in his heart. Her twin companion doubt came in. Their presence drove out the Word of God. Doubt robbed him of God’s best. When the tormentor came he was not ready. Sadly he listened.
The Bible tells us that there are many voices that will speak to us . We must listen but test the voice of the spirit. Determine if you are hearing the voice of God. Is what being said in agreement with the promises of God? God will always speak of good things. He will challenge us to remove the limits. To think and act bigger. Not just to receive money. He has far more for us. Satan will talk negative. He will accuse. He is the Tormentor. He places sickness and disease on people. He delights in human suffering. Our loving heavenly Father delights when we are whole. He wants us to prosper in our health; in all things. He corrects but He never taunts. He always ensures we receive the best. He always looks out for our well-being. Only good gifts come from Him.
Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above; it comes down from the Father of lights [the Creator and Sustainer of the heavens], in whom there is no variation [no rising or setting] or shadow cast by His turning [for He is perfect and never changes].
James 1:17, Amplified Bible Classic Edition
We must be very careful about yielding to logic and common sense. God specialises in the illogical and impossible. Is anything too hard for God?Nothing absolutely nothing! God always stand in agreement with his word. He has already healed us. We must the truth of His word. Jesus died so that we will be healed. He anticipated that Satan will try to take us out with an death, accident, sickness or disease. Jesus received power over death and the grave. All power was given unto Him. He has given us that power on this earth. Violently take hold of the Kingdom. Fight for your healing.
I cannot tell you how many times Satan has placed sickness on me. When I started ministering it was entirely lead by the Holy Spirit. By Word of Knowledge operating in my body I would know what illness was happening in someone’s body. Sometimes it worked with the gift of prophesy and word of wisdom, so I could tell the specifics of what was happening. If there was mental illness I would feel it. If it was physical I would feel it. Sometimes it happened when I was just serving at an event. As I was busy I would miss what was happening. So the person wouldn’t be ministered to. When that happened intense pain would grip my body. It would become so unbearable that if I didn’t pray I would pass out. The only way to release it was to pray for the person or beg God to remove it. Well that’s what I thought until I was corrected.
God sent me to pray for someone with a weakened immune system. To my horror she declined the offer. The moment she did the pain became far more intense. A few minutes later the pain was crippling. I could not move. I cried out to God. He answer instantly. What he said shocked me.
I asked God why was He doing this to me. His response set me free. You shall know the truth and the truth will set you free. Satan did this”, He responded. “You have not taken the time to examine my word. It says all sickness and disease were placed on My son. He took it on himself and released healing to you (Isaiah 53:4-5). My children are told to come unto Me and I will give them rest unto their soul. Their burdens are to be cast on Me not you. You should have spoken to me about the pain you were experiencing. Instead of checking what my word says you chose to listen to others. Their advise caused you to think you were pleasing me by enduring the suffering.”
28 “Are you weary, carrying a heavy burden? Then come to me. I will refresh your life, for I am your oasis. 29 Simply join your life with mine. Learn my ways and you’ll discover that I’m gentle, humble, easy to please. You will find refreshment and rest in me. 30 For all that I require of you will be pleasant and easy to bear.”
Matthew 11:28-30, The Passion Translation
As God finished speaking I rebuked Satan and commanded the pain to leave. It left immediately. I was instantly healed.
Two weeks later Satan launched another attack. I woke with swollen gum. When I examined it in the bathroom mirror the gum above the front teeth was filled with some liquid. It was soar. Without hesitating I commanded the gum to be healed. In a snap, it shrunk right before my eyes. The only evidence of the swelling was a small pimple on the gum.
Now you know that Satan is the father of lies. Jesus said he was a liar from the beginning. And there is no truth in him. So what he did was try to deceive me. He knew that the Holy Spirit told me not to eat any sugar during that period. I was stupid to have mentioned it to a friend. Little did I know that my host would be influenced to purchase lots of ice cream, chocolate and cake for us. I really did indulge too much. When I saw the swollen gum I remember hearing a voice telling me that it was done to teach me a lesson. It would ensure that I didn’t eat any sweats.
It sounds logical. God would zap me with gum disease to stop me from having sugar. It was for my own good. But this was not in keeping with his nature. He may allows us to experience the negative consequences of our action. But this is not all the time. He knows that his love is sufficient. It leads man to repentance (Romans 2:4). God waited for years before he punished the nations for their wrong doing. For decades prophets would be sent to warn them. The warnings also came with grace being extended. The message was always “turn and I will spare. Turn and I will be gracious to you. I will do this! I will do that!” That pattern never changed. God knows that once there is a desire to please Him we will come to spiritual maturity. We will become so disciplined that we will have full control over our body. While we are growing there will be times when we mess up. All children does that. He understand that will happen. He’s patient enough to wait. He is the perfect Father. He will encourage you until you get it right.
Pastor Donnie’s testimony reminds us that we must be vigilant of Satan’s devices. He comes to steal, kill and destroy. We need not be afraid. We must stand our ground and refuse to yield victory. Christ has won the victory. He’s given us that victory.
Yet even in the midst of all these things, we triumph over them all, for God has made us to be more than conquerors, and his demonstrated love is our glorious victory over everything!
