Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; For I shall yet praise Him, The help of my countenance and my God. Psalm 42:11
The men had been adrift at sea for a long time. When they went fishing, early in the morning, they never expected things to take such a dramatic turn.
Carlos and his friends had gone on their usual fishing trips in the Pedro Keys, a group of very small islands.. The plan was to spend only a few hours. No provision was made for food. They rowed out into the deep waters without water and life jackets or other safety equipment. Why would they need to be afraid?
The sea was their friend. For years it allowed their fathers to provide food for the family. Times at sea were fun. They understood the moods and subtleties of the sea. Their ears were attuned to the ebb and flow of the current. Their eyes read the movements of the clouds. It’s formation sent smoke signals that warned of impending rain.
The early morning weather had not indicated any hint of danger. There was an azure sky. The same as the previous days. The meteorological readings signaled that there was no danger. So they left home.
Carlos was happy to be in familiar territory. The sea welcomed him. He was confident that they could easily find their way back to land.
Suddenly, without warning a storm came. It obscured the view. The boat was tossed battered. Everyone had to work hard to keep it from capsizing afloat.
The storm raged for hours. Only years of experience kept them alive. When it ended they realized they were pushed further out to sea. They were hungry and thirsty but happy to be alive. It was impossible to tell where they were. No land was insight. Thick fog obscured the view.
Instinctively, they turned the boat around and heading in the direction of land. The gambit paid off. They saw a faint light in the distance. As they rowed towards it, they realized it was a lighthouse. They were saved!
Let it Shine
God’s word is like this lighthouse. It guides us safely out of troubled waters and the storms of our life. Instead of reacting to the storm, anchor yourself. Calm yourself. Shift your focus from the challenge.
Tell your problem about your God. Let your mind recall what God has done for you. Talk to Him. Thank Him for both the good and the bad. Talk to Him about your situation. Surrender it to Him.
Let His Word speak to your issue. What does it say? Speak His Word out loud to yourself. Thank about how it applies to your situation. Repeat it to yourself several times. Let it reach deep within and pull you back to safety.
The next time you feel overwhelmed. Take your eyes off the situation. Worship until you are no longer fixated on it. Recall the promises of God.
When you feel alone. Remember that you are never alone. God is always with you. God promised that He is always there with you. In Deuteronomy 31 verse 6 He encouraged us to, “Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you”.
When you feel anxious. Remember the Lord said, ‘I have not given you the spirit of fear, I have given you the spirit of power, love and a sound mind’ (2 Timothy 1:7). Tell your fear to go!
When you are depressed. God says, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30). Place ALL your worries in His hand. Tell the spirit of heaviness to go!
When you are unsure about what to do. Think on this. God’s Word says, “the steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, And He delights in his way.” (Psalm 37:23)
Sometimes we look to mantras and popular aphorisms to remain motivated when we are faced with long-term problems; whether major or minor. No matter what they may be there is guidance in the Bible. It is an incredible source of correction, comfort, strength and encouragement for the believer.
When darkness is around you. Please take up your flashlight. Open it. Let it shine in the depths of your soul. The darkness will flee!
