Daily Meditation – Our First Duty

11 Then the Lord said to me, ‘Arise, begin your journey before the people, that they may go in and possess the land which I swore to their fathers to give them.’

The Essence of the Law

12 “And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways and to love Him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul,

 Deuteronomy 10:12, NKJV

When it was time for the children of Israel to enter into the promise land Moses was given several instructions for them. These instructions were to ensure the presence of the Lord was always among them and guarantee their prosperity. Within the instructions was a primary directive. They were required to love the Lord their God with every fiber of their being.

It seems odd that they needed to be told to love a God who was faithful in His promise to Abraham to free them from slavery. A God who punished the nation of Egypt, their slave masters, by transferring the wealth of the country to them before they were freed. A God who further punished their masters by drowning their King and their army. A God who walked with them in the wilderness for many years. During that time he worked signs and wonders among them and fed them, with food from heaven. He also kept them in perfect health and protected them from being attacked and a plethora of other things.

I am sure you are like me. You would be the first to say, “Lord Jesus I love you. You do not have to prove your love for me. You died for me and that is enough. Thank you Lord. It is an honor to serve you.”

Unfortunately, all too often we operate just like the Hebrews when our love is tested. Just like our natural relationship, when adversity comes sometimes we reflect on something that existed before. When the trial gets intense we may find ourselves pondering this question, “why did I do this to myself”.

Yet that is the power of love. It keeps us in a relationship when things get very rough. When we are assaulted by situations in our relationship. Something causes us to hold on. To fight for the relationship. When we know the ways of our spouse it serves as an anchor. Their kindness, gentle spirit, industriousness, faithfulness, etc causes us to remain. His or her ways allow us to commit to remain ‘for better or worse, until death separates us’.

When we know God’s ways we will not depart from Him; no matter what. Moses knew his ways. It endeared him to the faithful service of Yahweh.

Our walk with God is a love affair. He loves on us. We love on Him. He shows us His love by making us His sons and daughters. He cares of our needs. When matters arise, we go to Him and responds in this manner.

“Hey! I’ve got this! Don’t worry about it. Go rest!”

At other times, He imparts grace to empower us to allow us to be victorious. He blesses all that we do. We cannot prove our love by the things we do. However, He needs us to be the expression of His love for others. That’s why He asks us to serve Him. When our actions touch the life of an individual we are agents of His love. Strangers are brought into contact with Him. It makes it possible for them to feel His love. To understand the vastness of it.

As we pour out our love for Him, in response to His leading, the relationship is strengthened. The lines of communication become clearer. He begins talking more to us.

Father, we love you. We thank you for choosing us. Thank you for redeeming us. We desire to know your ways. Please teach us your ways. Unfold Your love through your Word. We desire to walk in the fear and love of You. Lord please give us a new heart that seeks after you. A heart that fears and keeps your commandments. We acknowledge our weaknesses and failings. Our righteousness is nothing compared to You. There is nothing we can do without You. Help us to demonstrate your love where ever we go. Lord teach us your heart. Amen!
