Daily Meditation – Called to Servanthood

42 But Jesus called them to Himself and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them.

43 Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant.

44 And whoever of you desires to be first shall be slave of all.

45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”

Mark 10:42-45, New King James Version

We are called to be servants. Can you believe it? This word may turn you off. There is nothing sexy about it. Popular culture does not celebrate it. There will never be a reality show about the ‘lifestyle of the swaggerific servants’ or ‘keeping up with the chief servants’.  No one throws a party for the ‘servant of the year or decade’.

Accolades are reserved for kings, billionaires, presidents, prime ministers, entrepreneurs, great achievers in academia, science, technology, arts, engineering, the humanities and many other areas but not to servants.

Let’s face facts! No matter how you try to dress it up, the word is just unattractive.

Yet God calls believers to a life of servitude. Our first service is to Him. It is the greatest expression of our love for Him. The lifting up of our hands and expressiveness of our words mean nothing, if we do not serve Him.

Our service to Him is done by prayers offered to him on behalf of others. It is also reflected in our participation in activities in the church community and outreach programs. Instead of simply going to receive from the service and the preaching or after our needs have been met. We must now honor God by expressing love to others through service. Time must be given of our time and talents to advance the God’s Kingdom.

When we help to advance the Kingdom of God, He will bless us. God always reciprocates by taking care of our needs. There are times when I have required something and have found that before I even think about it, God has already made provisions. What’s amazing is how God has always provided for his servants as they meet the needs of others.

We advance the Kingdom of God by sharing the good news, our prayers for others and provision for the needy.

When we develop the heart of the servant, Jesus will unearth talents, bless us with creative ideas, strategies, partnerships and resources that not only blesses us but will be a blessing to the Kingdom.

Lord give me the heart of worship. That enables us to overcome selfishness. To look beyond our immediate situation and circumstances. And serve you. To rest in the assurance of your promise for my life. I know your plans for me are greater than I can imagine. Help me to walk out that promise as I exercise my faith by showing your love to others. Let me see your face in the homeless, the fatherless, the poor, needy, the addicts, the rejected and outcasts of society. Father my mind, voice, hand and feet are available to bring glory to your kingdom. Use them to bring deliverance, healing and restoration to broken lives and homes. Empower me to be an instrument of your peace, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
